Tutorial: Max For Live Paths, Objects, and Observers

This tutorial goes into the Max for Live paths, objects and observers. There has been a lot of questions on how to interact with live through Max. This screencast provides a basic tutorial on the needed objects and techniques to accomplish this. future tutorials will illustrate how to use all of the objects in a larger program. The patch i created to demonstrate these objects is posted in the forums under tutorials for those who have M4L. Check out the video after the jump...

Great!

Really liked this tutorial, very clear how you go through each of the paths one at a time. I was setting up a Max For Live patch today where I am triggering different clips programmatically. Just like Follow Actions, but on steroids.

I have watched you tutorials

I have watched you tutorials before, but today they actually make since to me. So this was great to watch again. THANKS!

In this tutorial you say something about a "reference guide" for all of the path/objects/observers etc. Is that avalible somewhere?

I would like to know how to "set" a, send A, and send B on a track, kind of like you do with the "set solo" in the tutorial.

How would I do that?

how do i specify that it is the device on/off that want to control? (eg how did you know that you had to use the word solo to control the solo button?)

thanks

Alot of the Information you

Alot of the Information you seek is in the document called The Live Object Model (LOM). If you look at the Max (Not in Live) help then click on Max For Live and on the right hand side there should be the document I mentioned.

For devices... Here is a little patch that uses M4L.api.SelectParameter in a bpatcher to show you all of the parameters.

I have had a good look at the Device and Device Parameters sections on the LOM document but cant understand what it is that I need to do to tell live.object which parameter I want it to control...

I have tried applying your method used in the tutorial to control the tracks Solo button but the same process dosn't seem to work for device parameters. Any more help would be hugely appreciated...

thanks

Device On/Off

hey there,

been having nightmares about this, i copied your patch above and when trying to set Device On ( because that is the parameter shown in the drop down menu ) m4l is saying syntax error. Is that the parameter name I am after to switch on/off a device?

thanks
