Hi all,
My first post here. I've been using Ableton for years and have used Max a little bit. I'm looking to integrate (properly) my Novation Remote SL/Automap into Ableton Live as a control surface and I reckon that maybe Max for Live is the way to go about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I should be looking to do to achieve this? Basically, where do I start? Thanks,
Derek
Max4Live and novation Remote SL
Derek,
Novation is sending me an SL Remote as we speak. I should have more info on what the capabilities are next week.
Regards,
Mike
No prob Derek.. Still waiting for the unit.

M4L does not support any access of the Remote25SL's Remote Script as it does with the APC40 or the Launchpad. All my customization has been possible through the use of standalone Max patches. Hopefully they implement access to these other scripts in subsequent versions of M4L, but for now there is nothing. There are still plenty of things you can do with the hardware, but access to its functionality through the LiveAPI isn't one of them.
The RM25SL's control surface script is still pretty robust, but its missing a few things that I find indispensible (e.g. display of mute and solo status in the LCD display, dedicated access to sends 1-4 without having to make multiple presses of a button, access to solo'ing from the record enable switches to name but a few). I recommend trying out the Novation with the built in script first and seeing what you do and don't like about it.
Maybe someday this format will be open to us. Unfortunately, right now we cannot ammend or add to the protocol through the LiveAPI, nor are there existing decompyled python scripts that we can edit for use directly with the hardware. Hopefully this will change.
Do you have the Remote SL or Remote SL MkII? I don't know anything specific, but i was under the impression that the MKII either will be supported or is already. I could be wrong though.
Mike
I'm using a Remote SL MK1. I prefer having two LCD's to one. I don't really think the LED's are worth the loss of one screen. The MK1 and 2 are essentially the same otherwise, just a couple of the buttons (transport controls) have been put in different places. Mike, am I right in thinking that Novation approached you to work on something for them? That's the impression I got from your post. As I said before I'm not an expert but it looks like the Lemur now has really good integration (full control) with Ableton via Max for Live. Unless Jazzmutant are working directly with Ableton and are being given access to things the general public aren't, it should be feasible for the Remote SL to be given to same sort of integration. The Remote SL just talks to the Automap software. It's just a case of making the Automap software talk to Max for Live either through standard midi, or HUI.
Novation hasn't really approached me for anything specific as of yet. I definitely keep in touch with them as they do some interesting stuff. I would love to work with them in some way or another.
In terms of devices talking to Live, here is how it goes...
The device has to get approved by Ableton and then a Python mapping gets created for the device that then allows the new device to be accessible through the Live API. The ones that are know to take advantage of this so far are the Novation Launchpad, and the Akai APC20 and 40. I was under the impression that the new Remote SL MKII devices might have these mappings too. But, as I do not have them yet, I cannot comment.
As soon as I get my hands on the Remote SL zero MKII that they are supposed to send me then I will know more.
Regards,
Mike
Has there been any progress on this? I have a Remote 25 SL MK2 and would really like to start remapping some of the automapped controls but there seems to be some weird problems with it... you can't just "Ctrl-M" and reassign the parameter.
Thanks,
Chris
